Changes
At Crater Lake, I re-evaluated my pack and received new shoes. The Montrails I began the trip with had lost all support after about 80+ miles. I tossed them and had a pair of Brooks Cascadias 10s mailed to me. However, the Cascadias 10s are not well made and began tearing at the seams near the big toe after about 100 miles. I finished the hike with them regardless.
I lightened the pack by mailing home parts of the stove, the lid to the pot, the rain jacket and pants, the safari shirt, the down sleeping bag, and the camera. I bought a cheap, compact sleeping bag, rated at 50 degrees that weighs about 1.5 pounds. The weather had been warm so between the sleeping bag, and wearing the beanie and puffy jacket at night I was able to sleep for the rest of the trip. However, if the night temperatures dipped below 50 I was uncomfortable.
I purchased an emergency rain poncho that I used at Elk Lake during a downpour. It ripped soon after. I kept it in the pack just in case but it didn’t rain very much for the rest of the trip.
Next trip, I would bring a pack cover for the rain, an ultralight rain jacket, and a lighter sleeping bag.
